Report by Robin Youngs,
Consultant ENT Surgeon Gloucester

The annual meeting of the BRS for 2009 was held in Cheltenham, being hosted by Robin Youngs and Kate Evans. Cheltenham Racecourse proved to be an excellent setting for the meeting, being popular with delegates and trade exhibitors alike. There was a full and stimulating academic content to the meeting.

The first session saw ten excellent short papers show-piecing some of the first class work currently being undertaken in British rhinology. The standard of presentation was outstanding, with Jonathan Fishman being awarded the prize for best paper for his talk on “A single-blinded prospective randomised controlled trial comparing intense endoscopic cleaning versus minimal intervention following functional endoscopic sinus surgery”.

The next session focused on trans-gender and psychological issues in rhinoplasty. Hisham Saleh presented his experience of rhinoplasty in patients undergoing gender re-assignment surgery at Charing Cross. David Veale from The Maudsley Hospital gave an excellent talk on “Body dysmorphia and the nose”. These presentations were followed by a light-hearted but taxing rhinology quiz ably put together by Kate Evans.

After lunch Professor Jan Gosepath from Wiesbaden, Germany delivered the inaugural Karl Storz Lecture. The subject was “Novel concepts in the management of nasal polyposis”. This was a superb account of the pathophysiology of nasal polyposis, with its cllinical applications. Of particular interest was Professor Gosepath’s experience of aspirin immunotherapy in aspirin sensitive polyp patients. The afternoon was rounded off by a discussion of interesting cases, followed by the society’s AGM.

The event concluded by Professor Valerie Lund handing over the Presidency of the BRS to Andrew Swift. Mr Swift thanked Professor Lund for her work on behalf of the Society during the three years of her stewardship. Also many thanks are due to Barbara Komoniewska from the ENT UK office for her part in the administration of the meeting. Next year’s meeting will be held in Oxford and organized by Grant Bates.
